What is that site about ?
I created this site because after many long searches on the
internet, I found only a few sites on this subject. I want
to share my experiences and observations from growing and
harvesting currants. I would like to describe here problems
I faced while cultivating currants, types of machines and
tools used by me, and how do I protect currants from pests
and diseases. I would like to ask you for sending me email
with your suggestions. If interest about this site will be
high, perhaps I attempt to create something bigger ( maybe
sort of information service about currants:) ).
My farm
My name is Kazimierz Rejman. I have small farm situated in
south-eastern part of Poland, exactly in Czarna town, 20 km
from Rzeszow city. I own about 6 hectares of cultivated land
where for over 20 years I have been growing currants (altogether
in my area there is about 180 hectares of currants), due to
being mechanic and constructor at the same time, devising
and constructing currant harvesters, became my passion.
I took over the farm after my parents, who rather wheren't
concerned about currants (they had about half an hectare of
redcurrants). They had an orchard, planted onions and corns.
My older brother who worked at the Research Institute in Albigowa
persuaded me into growing blackcurrants (it was in 1978).
It was the time when I planted first currants, due to fact
I didn't like to pick them by hands, I decided to work on
mechanizing this crop (in those times no harvesters where
available). At the begining I had only 3 hectares of currants,
but gradually I planted it on the rest of my farm. Years passed,
I was reacher in experiences and devised new versions of my
harvester. Despite the fact I constructed about 20 of them,
I still have new ideas. As you can see, harvesters I own are
to powerfull for the small farm I have, so I harvest currants
for my neighbours who don't have them. My farm is small, so
recently I have been thinking about buying or leasing some
additional hectares.
